To Louis Kahn: Largely used as an informal recreation area by Roosevelt Island and New York City residents, it has recently been the focus of a phased master planning effort. The Southpoint location has been coined as one of the last, great, undeveloped park spaces in New York City. Panoramic views toward Manhattan constantly reference the island in the reflection of the jagged skyline of midtown.
The redevelopment of this area as a park has captured the attention
of the community and brought to light questions regardingthe future reuse of the Smallpox Hospital ruins, an abandoned and decaying structure, located in the middle of the site.
Beginning in the mid-1970s, the 10-acre Southpoint area has been subject to a number of development proposals, although the General Development Plan for the island designated the space as parkland.
